Arctic Trip Day Two:

This page is a photo journal of our trip to Northern Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic, in September 2003, in search of Platysiphon and Platyarcticus, two brown algae endemic to the Arctic

We were a little groggy the first morning after listening to what we thought was rain all night...
It turns out that it was colder than we thought on our first night and we wouldn't have to worry about rain after all.
Just because it was September was no reason to think it would be warm. Despite the cold, we had to get a picture of the whole group. (From left to right) Shiatie, Bob, Kevin, Jim, Gary and Chris.
By the time we loaded up the boat and rode over to our dive site most of the snow had melted away. Putting gear together with gloves on was a new challenge.
Once we suited up it was time to head in. The water was unbelievably clear and cold. The visibility was similar to the tropics but the temperature was a little colder than the Caribbean.
After two successful dives, during which we found the seaweed we had traveled all these miles for, we headed back to camp. Which guy do you think had a problem with his neck seal and got soaked during the first two dives?
To warm up we thought it was a good time to search out the canine who was formerly employed as our fearless guard. He had been spotted but was not very interested in the job we had for him. It was time for him to earn his keep.
Surprisingly, he wasn't very good at hiding and it wasn't long before we found him. You can see how happy he is to be heading back to camp.
This time he wasn't taking off.
